The Magnolia tree was brought into Hawai'i as an ornamental and can be seen growing in many yards. A magnificent tree, the Magnolia has dark green leaves with large flowers up to 8 inches across.
There are many varieties of Magnolia with flowers ranging from pinks to pure whites. Most of the flowers have a leathery thick petal that opens from a bud to a full flower within a couple of days. The full flower usually lasts only a day or two before dropping off.
The Magnolia flowers have a delightful scent. The one pictured here is from my own yard and when the flowers open it fills the area with a lemon scent (much like Lemon Pledge).
