The Pycreus polystachyos is one of many Sedge grasses that can be found on the Big Island (for another see Kili'o'opu). Unlike most of the types of sedge that grow on the Big Island Pycreus polystachyos is native to the island.
The plant can grow up to 3 feet tall and is identified by the three perfectly spaced radial leaves that come out of the top of each stalk and by the golden tan, tufted spikelets that also angle from the center of each stalk. Unlike Kili'o'opu, which proprigates by a creeping rhizome, the Pycreus polystachyos produces seeds.
