The Hawaiian Islands, being isolated in the middle of the pacific, have no known cases of rabies. To keep rabies from entering the state Hawai'i has a quarantine law.
As of June 30, 2003 there are new laws, which make it easier for you to bring your pets into the state. Basically there are three different quarantine confinement lengths that vary from 1 to 5 days, 30 days or 120 days. The more you do upfront to meet the requirements, the less time your pet stays in quarantine.
Here are government links that take you to the various important documents you will need:
There are Quarantine Stations located on Honolulu and also the Big Island. On the Big Island, Bar-King Dog Kennels in the Puna District (near Hilo and Pahoa) offers outstanding accommodations and are certified by the state as an official Quarantine Station. Because they are popular, call early to book your pets room. You can contact Bar-King Dog Kennels at (808) 966-8733. The location of Bar-King makes it easy for you to visit your pet daily! (We speak from experience; the cute dog at the top of this page is our dog Coco - who stayed for 30 days at Bar-King.)
